الماضي المستمر يُستخدم للتعبير عن أحداث بدأت في الماضي واستمرت فترة زمنية قبل أن تنتهي.

أمثلة منفية:
- I wasn’t watching TV yesterday.
- They weren’t studying at that time.

استخدام when:
تُستخدم للربط بين جملتين: الحدث الأطول في الماضي يكون في الماضي المستمر، والحدث الأقصر في الماضي البسيط.
الصياغة:
When + Past Simple , Past Continuous
أمثلة:
- When my father arrived, I was studying English.
- When Khalid took the photo, I was riding my horse.
استخدام while:
- بينما حدث مستمر في الماضي، وقع حدث آخر (أقصر) في الماضي البسيط.
- أو للتعبير عن حدثين كانا مستمرين معاً.
أمثلة:
- While it was raining, I took some photos.
- While my mother was cooking, I was cleaning my room.
- I asked the teacher a question while he was explaining the lesson.
التمارين:
- Fill in the blanks with the correct tense (Past Simple or Past Continuous).

الخلاصة:
زمن الماضي المستمر أداة هامة للتعبير عن الأحداث الجارية في الماضي عند وقوع حدث آخر، أو للتعبير عن حدثين كانا مستمرين في نفس الوقت. وهو يُستخدم كثيراً مع أدوات الربط when و while لتوضيح التسلسل الزمني.
